Dussehra is one of the most important and widely celebrated Hindu festivals in India. The word Dussehra is derived from Sanskrit "Dasha-hara" which literally means "remover of bad karma" or simply “auspicious ten days”. This festival is also popularly known as Vijay Dashami, Dasara, Jaya Satam.The significance of this festival has its roots in Hindu Mythology when Lord Rama was forced to banish his wife Sita to the forest for her safety by his step-mother Kaikeyi because he had been commanded by her husband King Dasharatha who wanted his son Bharata to be crowned king. Lord Rama and his wife Sita, who was a half-sister of the righteous king Dasharatha, were childhood friends and married at a young age. The demon king Ravana wanted to marry Sita as she came from a royal family. Knowing that Ravana would not let Sita go without obtaining her in marriage, Rama contemplated on leaving her behind to King Dasharatha for safekeeping but decided against doing so as he loved her too much to live without her. However, his father was anxious about the safety of his son's wife and wanted her kept away from Ravana's clutches. Rama did not wish to break his father's heart, so he left Sita behind in the care of King Dasharatha. On reaching their forest dwelling, Sita asked Lord Rama to return to Ayodhya and fulfill his duty as a son. Rama promised that he would return soon and assured her that she would be safe in the forest. Sita stayed in the Agastyamalai hill ranges waiting for Lord Rama's return from Ayodhya. However, Ravana managed to abduct her by disguising himself as a sage and carried her away to his kingdom in Lanka (present day Sri Lanka). Lord Rama was distraught and sought help from his brother and friend, the demigod Lakshmana. Together they sought the help of Lord Vishnu, Bhima and Hanuman. Ravana's maharajah, Ravana himself became infuriated at Sita's abduction and as a result wanted to do away with her as soon as possible. Knowing about Sita's abduction by Ravana, Dasharatha sought his brother Bharata's help to rescue Sita from the clutches of Ravana. King Dasharatha was also eager that his son be crowned king on Dasara day itself which was only 10 days away (Vijay Dashami). Dasharatha asked Bharata to go to Lord Rama's dwelling with gifts and seek his brother's help. Bharata finally reached Ayodhya, where he was stopped by their stepmother Kaikeyi for bringing gifts. She told him that he could only bring the gifts to Lord Rama and not Sita, who she claimed should be returned to her father first. First Bharata was insulted by Kaikeyi before he could speak the reason for his visit at Ayodhya.
